WHAT I LEARNED WHEN I READ THE BIBLE
Lot, Abraham’s nephew, moves to Sodom, Abraham pleads to God for the protection of Lot. Sodom is destroyed but God saves Lot and his family. That pretty much summarizes Genesis 18 and 19.
There are three takeaways I learned. Lot chose to live in Sodom, which was a town known for its worldly ways. It was full of glamour, glitz, and wild revelry. It was a “don’t go down there at night” sort of town, yet Lot still chose to plant his family in the middle of this lifestyle. Takeaway 1: “You are who you hang with.” We need to be wise about the choices we make.
God told Abraham He was going to destroy Sodom because the town had become so corrupt. Abraham pleaded to God to save the righteous, even if that was just ten people. God destroyed the town but saved Lot and his family. Takeaway 2: A praying person can make a difference. God hears the calls of those who love Him. (Psalm 50:15; Jeremiah 29:11-12).
Takeaway 3: This is more of an ominous foreshadowing of what is to come. Jesus warns that towns that do not respond to the truth of His teaching will suffer a fate worse than Sodom. (Matthew 11:20-24).
